Students at Blairstown Elementary School organized a book drive that will provide nearly 2,000 books to underserved children across New Jersey.
The school-wide initiative was a collaborative effort involving multiple classes of Mrs. Messina’ Student Climate and Culture Committee. Mrs. Pelosi’s math class counted the almost 2000 books that were distributed through the "Bridges of Books" Foundation, an organization dedicated to increasing literacy access for children in underserved communities. After the counting, Mrs. Goncalves’s class assisted in the packing of the nearly 30 boxes and loaded onto a pickup truck, supervised by Mrs. Warnkin and delivered to Bridges of Books Foundation..
Bridges Of Books, to this date have delivered well over a million books to students in all grades to schools in New Jersey for a full range of literacy events throughout the school year and summer.
Students choose books through “Free Book Fairs,”’ where the donated books are laid out so the children can pick through what their interests are. More importantly these are not one time donations. Children need ongoing access to books in order to develop their literacy skills.
A huge thank you to our students, staff, and community for making this initiative a success and helping to foster a love of reading for children in need!
